Our Canteen Continues to Make Healthier Food Choices

Sausage Sizzles are off the menu!
We are really proud of our canteen menu which emphasizes home-made, healthy choices. However, our Sausage Sizzle fundraisers just don’t fit our canteen philosophy or policy and we really need to do something about it.
Starting this term the sausages in a bun will be replaced with a Thursday special such as shepherd’s pie, pizza with salad and chicken pasta bake. The canteen staff, volunteers and committee will feel much happier to be preparing and serving yummier, healthier food and our kids (and their teachers) will benefit and enjoy it to. As usual, we will have vegetarian and gluten free options available.
We would still like to ask parents to bring in a snack to sell for morning tea on their class fundraiser days and, most importantly, to come and volunteer in the canteen to help us serve the kids and help prepare lunch. The morning teas and lunches help raise funds that are used in the classrooms.
Healthy Food Fundraisers
We would also like to promote and encourage healthier options for the snacks and treats prepared for morning tea fundraisers. Jelly cups are very popular with the kids but not with the teachers! Our fundraisers should comply with the Department of Education’s Healthy Food and Drinks Policy which says confectionary and chocolate are off the menu!
Other suggestions are: plain popcorn in a bag, fruit muffins, banana loaf, fruit kebabs, trail mix in an ice-cream cone, fruit juices or smoothies, popsicles, mini quiches, mini pizzas, bruschetta and you know what, the kids love them!
Please, no store or bakery bought food. If you work and cannot do home-made, one idea is to buy a bag of frozen berries (or freeze peeled, chopped bananas on special) and a tub of yoghurt and drop into the canteen and we will make smoothies - which the kids love.
Our lovely canteen staff can also give you many ideas, and recipes. Come in and see us.
We are always ready to hear your ideas too.
Thank you Volunteers – we need you!
Thank you to our team of volunteers who make our canteen a great place to work. (The Dental Van Staff say our canteen is the best and they look forward to coming to Dunsborough.)
We have an amazing team. People like Leanne, Di and Karen who book days off work, Michelle who used to use babysitting days, Caz and Merri who fit canteen into their work roster, Rae who comes in Terms 1,2 and 3 but can’t do Term 4 when her business gets busy, Liz who comes in every week in between reading with her kids’ classes, our lovely Dads - Dane and Phil, and our special Nannas - Shirley, Win and Helen.
Our canteen staff are also school volunteers, Cheryl runs the Book Club, Lee is a fete coordinator
and Jeanine is a Book Week and Fruit and Veg Week organiser extraordinaire!
We have people who don’t bake at home but love learning a recipe, neat freaks who come in to organise the pantry, clean freaks who love cleaning the oven, people who are happy to wash dishes the whole time and those lovely people who pop in and make everyone a cuppa.
We can work in with you.
Please consider a day, a half day or pop in any time.
