Physical Education

The purpose of the Physical Education (PE) program at Dunsborough Primary School (PS) is to positively engage students with the skills and confidence to become lifelong enthusiasts of physical activity.

In close alignment with the WA Curriculum, our program is planned and assessed against three key aspects:

  • Moving Our Body (Fundamental Movement Skills),
  • Learning through Movement (Teamwork and games strategies) and
  • Understanding Movement (Health concepts linked to exercise).

PE at Dunsborough PS is delivered through an extensive range of sports and activities, many designed specifically for our context.  The annual Year 3 bike education program and cross-country event takes place on the trails surrounding our grounds and the in-term swimming lessons are taught in the safety of the Geographe Bay ocean enclosure, just a short walk from the school.

There is a focus on fundamental movement skills (FMS) in early childhood, which are extended in the middle and upper school with game-based activities using traditional sports such as tennis, footy and soccer; along with non-traditional sports such as tchoukball, pickleball and footgolf.   Using a daily whole school approach to fitness, our students attain at least 2 hours of physical activity each week, in line with the recommended Department of Education guidelines.

In addition to developing physical and game-based skills and tactics, the PE program actively demonstrates the You Can Do It program principles of organisation, getting along and being confident, persistence and resilience.

Dunsborough PS has been acknowledged as a leading school in the area of primary school PE due not only to the quality of its programs but the extra-curricular enrichment activities on offer.  This includes organised lunchtime competitions, before school running club and Sporting Schools funded programs. In addition to clinics and workshops organised through external sport providers to further engage and inspire our students to be physically active both here and within the wider community.
