English

At Dunsborough Primary School, we believe English is fundamental to success at school and in life. Our teaching is guided by the Western Australian Curriculum (Version 9), developing students’ skills across the interrelated strands of Language, Literature and Literacy.

In the early years, we prioritise oral language development, phonological and phonemic awareness, and early reading and writing. We use evidence-based programs includingLetters and Sounds and Talk for Writing. In the upper years, there is a strong focus on vocabulary, morphology, comprehension, critical thinking, and literature studies. Our Literature Spine, ensures high quality literature is integrated into all aspects of our curriculum.

Our teachers use explicit teaching practices aligned with the Department of Education’s Teaching for Impact. Instruction is guided by ongoing assessment, including DIBELS, NAPLAN, PAT, Brightpath, early literacy screening tools, and the Year 1 Phonics Check, ensuring a responsive cycle of teaching and learning.

Teachers work collaboratively to plan, moderate and reflect on practice, supporting consistent, high-quality teaching and strong student outcomes.
