The Sustainability Committee at Dunsborough Primary School was established in 2010 to lead and support initiatives that promote environmental responsibility across our school. The committee focuses on key areas including waste management, water conservation, active transport, energy use, and biodiversity.
A central feature of our approach is the Green Ambassador Program, a whole-school initiative where student representatives develop leadership and environmental stewardship skills. These students share their knowledge within their classes and encourage sustainable practices at school and at home. Our Year 6 Green Ambassador leaders present regular updates at whole-school assemblies twice each term.
Our sustainability initiatives and activities include:
- Walking School Bus
- Ride to School initiatives
- Active Transport Challenge
- Waterwise gardens
- Vegetable garden
- Chicken coop
- Worm farm
- Green Ambassador Program
- Composting and waste management systems
- Recycling (managed by Green Ambassadors)
- Waste audits, supporting school accreditation
- Whole-school Clean-Up Day
- Water education and Water Week celebrations
- Annual Tree Planting Day
- Energy management (student monitors switching off lights)
- Extensive solar energy collection
- Bay OK Day
The Sustainability Committee meets each term to plan, monitor, and strengthen these initiatives across the school.
A highlight of our sustainability calendar is Bay OK Day. On this day, the whole school walks to the beach where community volunteers and local experts provide hands-on activities and learning experiences about our ocean, marine life, and environment. The day concludes with a shared picnic under the peppermint trees before returning to school.
